The tape was played over a sound system in which galvanometers had been directly connected to the line-out; long strings were attached between the pointers of these meters and the strings of a double bass, which consequently produced an eery humming music -- an unrecognizable translation of the speaking voices. Paul has used the same method on Reading, one of the tracks on Lost for Words, a CD that he recently made for the Table of the Elements label (TOE-CD-45).
